THE TAOIST SAGE

Simple Living

Wake,

eat a little

don't bother about thinking

take some light naps

enjoy rain sun flowers

don't think about bothering

eat a little

sleep.

So You Practice

So you practise Taoism?

No,

not really.

Oh,

what is your religion then?

Wild-garlic

nettles

bluebells.

Her Mind is Like a Jade Jar of Ice

Wu Cailuan had no interest in

emptiness or fullness, mirrors

or dust.

Being free from distinctions,

she folded mountains into a fan

and stuffed them

up her sleeve.

Cave Hermit

So many people working out the Tao

a cave hermit doesn’t know

cannot be bothered with such effort

Mountains are misty

mountains are clear

his simple smile

isn’t troubled one way or the other.

The Vacant Mind

The vacant mind

gazes

without focus

untouched

untroubled

by the world around

Does the self ever go away?

I ask

how can that which does not exist disappear?

Who then can sit with me

undisturbed by the silent

not-listening, not-discussing

not-doing

not-not

who is bothered by a blank stare?

Play!

Splash about in puddles

get stuck up a tree

roll around in spring meadows

play

play

play

look at you

when did you get so serious?

Forest Man

There is within me

a forest man

who longs for the fragrance

of mountain pine

whose wild eyes

find home

in darkening

branches.

Alone, alone, alone

he is

happily singing to himself

Being One

The appearance of all beings and non-beings

is the form of a single Being

they are not themselves they are Itself

Realising this the sage

neither knows the One nor the many

only beingness

I

I am a Taoist

I have attained the Tao

I am Awake

I know the Truth.

Who can see passed it all

when one thought is too many?

Simple Complexity

Having children late in life

moving country and working for myself,

people think that I have made my life

complicated

but is it the mind that makes things

complicated.

In the no-mind

everything flows freely.

Space

When I give myself space

to do nothing

from out of that

something happens

all by itself.

Attention

After muesli

and drinking tea in the garden

I sit barefoot in the grass

surrounded by birds and insects.

There are things that must be done

things demanding my attention

but my essence rests here all day.
